What is DVD?
DVD -- an acronym for Digital Versatile Disc or Digital Video disc -- is the next generation of optical storage technology. It is faster than a CD-ROM and has more storage capacity. A DVD-ROM can store up to 17GB of data on a single DVD disc , CD-ROM store 670MB. It can hold computer data, audio, and video. DVD is aimed at encompassing home entertainment, computers, business information and gaming into one digital format. It is expected to eventually replace all the present format. DVD is widely supported by all the major electronics companies, major computer manufacturers, and most major movie and record studios.
There are two types of DVD avaliable today. A consumer "set top box" DVD connected to your TV. This type plays DVD video (movies) on your TV. A computer DVD, or DVD-ROM is much like the existing CD-ROM. It is fitted to your computer and is able to read DVD data, and play interactive titles, or play DVD movies.
There are two ways of running DVD available, you need the DVD drive and a form of decoder. Decoder can be software or a card which is fitted in your PC. The software method is much more economical and I think this method will catch on. The minimum requirement to run DVD I think I am right to say is a P200 MMX CPU and AGP graphics card.
